How to Stop Your Running Belt From Bouncing (For Good)

24 August 2026

If you've ever finished a run and immediately taken your running belt off in frustration, you're not alone. "Bouncing" is the single most common complaint about running belts — and the good news is, it's almost always fixable.

1. It's too loose

The single biggest cause of a bouncing belt is wearing it too loose. Runners often size a belt the way they'd size a casual belt — with room to spare — but a running belt needs to sit snug, with about two fingers of room underneath, not four. Tighten the adjustable buckle until it feels almost too snug at a standstill; once you're moving, it'll feel right.

2. It's positioned wrong

Where your pouch or gel loops sit matters. If they're directly over your hip bone or swinging loose at your side, they'll bounce with every stride. Centre the load at the small of your back or front-centre, close to your body's centre of gravity, and it stays still.

3. It's carrying weight it wasn't built for

A slim race belt built for a bib and a gel will bounce if you load it up with a phone, keys and a water bottle. Match the belt to the job: a minimal race belt (like TEMPO PACE) for race day essentials, and a storage belt (like TEMPO CARRY) when you need to carry more.

4. The belt itself is the problem

Cheap elastic belts stretch out within a few wears and lose the snug fit that stopped the bounce in the first place. Look for low-profile webbing (not just elastic) with a proper adjustable buckle — it holds its fit run after run instead of degrading.

The quick test

Before you head out, do a 15–30 second jog on the spot. If anything moves independently of your body, tighten it one notch and test again. Get it right once and you'll stop thinking about your belt altogether — which is the whole point.
